Cotton muslin painted with Black Gesso covered with crumpled clingfilm, allowed to dry (takes weeks!). Painted with another layer of Black Gesso, and when dry, rubbed with iridescent Markals to create an antique finish. The applied motif was created in a similar way except the base fabric was silk and the clingfilm was removed.

Hello & welcome to our NEWS page. We have had a busy Autumn and just don't know where the time has gone - I expect you know that feeling, too! As ever we both live in hope of finding time to stitch - the plan is to stitch during the Christmas break, maybe we'll have some NEW samples for the NEW Year!

AUTUMN 2007

We can't believe how time has flown this autumn, we have been out & about at various shows, exhibitions, guilds and colleges; trading and teaching. We have met some lovely folks who are absolute "treasures" and as "keen as mustard" at their skills, very giving of their knowledge and truly inspirational. It doesn't matter today if you are a stitcher, hobbyist or crafter because all areas cross  and mingle & merge. Whatever your area of interest is, at least you are being creative in this mass produced world.

This Autumn, Karen has spent her time trying to keep me in check with my "chaotic mind and working practices" - I love to SPREAD everywhere!!!!! I know I have sent her to the edge and back. She deserves a break but because I'm shallow I am off to Lille in France leaving her to man the fort and publish this newsletter!!!!!!!!! (Karen: I must be a saint!!!!!NOT!!!!!!!)

I went on a workshop at the Fibre Factory 'Boxes with Sue Talbot', it was great fun as I was allowed to use copious amounts of GLUE without anyone saying "Fiona, what are you doing?" I LOVE glue as everyone who knows me will confirm!!!!!!!!! I used fabric that Karen had coloured & printed during her demos at the Fashion & Embroidery show in Harrogate, and, turned it into a wine box and a stationery box .

We have joined a group called Fibrepaperarts that is a group of like-minded people who want to explore new techniques using mixed media. Chris and Sandra are at the helm and organise monthly meetings, workshops, trips to shows and exhibitions. There will be an annual exhibition of work. For further details contact Chris on 01639 680254. fibrepaperarts@yahoo.com

UNIT 9 CLASSES for 2008

The new workshop list is now available UNIT 9 CLASSES

We will have the usual Tuesday class 10am to 4pm and where possible we have added some Saturday classes, but, we have also introduced a new type of class that runs over 6 sessions - it is called EXPERIMENTAL TEXTILES II. Each session is 2 hours long and will ultimately create a collage out of fabrics & papers, etc. Collage brings random materials together, that are layered and arranged to create an image that is complete or that can be further embellished and stitched.

WORKSHOP with JAMES HUNTING (www.jameshunting.com)   Cost £35.00 + materials charge.

We are also lucky enough to be able to offer a workshop at the Unit on Monday 4th February with James Hunting. This will be an adventure in hand stitching as James in an "embroidery man" who recycles fabrics by patching, piecing and hand stitching. James was the Embroiderers' Guild Scholar 2006 - he takes great pleasure in looking for lovely fabrics to recycle, in the construction and colour of a piece and in sharing his love of stitch. Details on UNIT 9 Classes

Hopefully Kim Thittichai ( I'm sure you have all seen her book HOT TEXTILES) will also be coming to UNIT 9 to give a workshop, I am just waiting for her to get back to me with some dates - so watch this space!!!!!!!!!! www.kimthittichai.com

Also, a special thanks to the C.I.T.O(chappie in the office) for his technological input, his expertise with a hammer & drill, his "rippling biceps" and patience. Available for hire at extortionate rates(terms & conditions apply).

Karen: I think Fiona's been at the Xmas cheer already!!!!!!!!!!! Who is this guy!!!!!!!!!!

Look forward to seeing you at the Westpoint Centre in January.

And finally. .........

Make time for yourself

Seasons Greetings

Fi & Karen
